Here is a list of best free storyboard software for Windows. Through these software, you can create and view a rough idea of a project before creating the actual one. Storyboard also helps you to understand what is missing or what is unimportant in a film, animation, or even on a chemical process project. Creating storyboard is also pretty easy as all software provide necessary tools to create a complete storyboard. Tools like pencil, brush, color palette, shapes (circle, square, etc.), chemical bonds, etc. can be found in these software.

In these software, you need to create one frame of the story at a time. Once every frame of the storyboard gets completed, you can play all the frames in a quick succession. According to your need, you can adjust the speed of playback to get the better idea about the project.

Storyboarder is my favorite storyboard software because it is the easiest software to create, organize, and play an animated story. Plus, it also lets you export the created project as PhotoShop, Final Cut Pro X, and Premier projects.

Storyboarder

Storyboarder is a free and opensource storyboard software for Windows. It is used to express your ideas by drawing a rough animated story frame by frame. Using it, you can design a sketch, 2D animation, colorful motion scene, etc.

This storyboard software provides all essential tools on its interface namely, drawing tools (pencil, brush, etc.), grid lines (center guide, grid guide, etc.), sketch pane (drawing area), metadata pane (to change the frame rate and to add dialogue), and board drawer (to add frames).

To create a motion scene, select a drawing tool and draw on the initial frame or board. After that add grid lines and colors from their respective tools section, if necessary. Now, you can add more frames from the board drawer to create a complete scene. Once done, press the play button to play all the created frames like a motion picture. The frame rate of the motion animation can be adjusted from the metadata pane by manually entering the time duration between each frame.

The created project can be exported as photoshop project, final cut pro x project, Adobe Premiere project, etc. Plus, you can also save the project as GIF, ZIP, and various image formats.

Celtex

Celtex is another free storyboard software for Windows. In this software, you can make playable storyboard by adding both pictures and sketches. Though pictures can be directly added to storyboard, sketches need to be manually drawn.

When you launch this software, you will be greeted by various project templates such as storyboard, film, audio-visual, comic book, novel, etc. By selecting the storyboard template, you can access the storyboard section. In this section, you can view an empty storyboard structure in which you can add a picture, text, and sketch. You can add picture and text directly by clicking on the add picture and text button, respectively. When you click on the add sketch button, a separate sketch window will open up to draw sketch manually. This sketch window has various tools like arrow, line, circle, square, etc., to draw a sketch. After drawing the sketch, you can add it to storyboard structure or export it as a PNG image.

Now, to create a playable storyboard, press the add sequence button to add more structure to storyboard. Follow the above steps to add pictures, text, and sketches to newly added structures. Once done, press the play button to view the created storyboard.

Note: This software does not include sketches while playing the storyboard.

Chemsense Animator is a free storyboard software for Windows. This software is mainly an animation and drawing tool to create storyboard animations of the chemical and nanoscopic processes. It is used to help students overcome their difficulties in understanding chemical concepts by providing the right tools, so they can imagine the world of molecular entities and reactions.

This storyboard creator provides a canvas/editor section and a side toolbar that contains various signs and symbols related to Chemistry. Symbols like solid bond, double bond, triple bond, lone pair electrons, cyclopropane ring, benzene, etc., are available. Besides symbols, you can also use text, pen, and color fill tools to highlight the whole process. The most important tool of this software is the add frame tool that provides additional frames to create a playable molecular reaction.

To create a complete chemical process, first, add symbols on canvas from the toolbar in a systematic manner. After that, add another frame by pressing add frame button and place the symbols on the new frame to show the succession of the previous frame. Repeat the same process until the whole process is not finished. Once done, press the play button to preview the process like a video. The frame rate can also be varied between 1 fps to 10 fps using frame speed slider.

The developed storyboard project can be exported as animated GIF, PNG, JPEG, and XML.
